Hello CPA Community,

This week has been a difficult one at CPA as we mourn the loss of Nathan McCurdy who was in 6th grade.  We came together in our classrooms and with our online students to support each other and to talk about feelings brought up by death, grief, and loss.  The entire staff did an amazing job of connecting with students, offering support, and helping students access counseling if needed.

People handle difficult news in different ways.  Being sad, confused, numb, angry, tired, overwhelmed, uncomfortable, or not sure how to feel are all normal reactions.  As a family member, you can help support your child by taking the time to listen to them about their concerns, questions, and feelings.  You can also reassure them that you will help them through this process and that they don’t have to do it alone.

Talking about death, grief, and loss can be difficult and there is no easy or ‘right’ way to do it. Having open conversations and sharing ideas that are consistent with your family’s values and religious or spiritual beliefs, reading books about grief and loss, and talking with a counselor can help as we navigate through our feelings.

If you would like resources on how to talk to your child, please reach out to our school counselor, Kari Knutson, known as ‘Miss K’ at  counselor@crowpointeacademy.org.  She has lots of resources and information to share.

We will continue to offer support to everyone in our community in the weeks and months ahead. Families, parents, guardians, students, and staff can access counseling through scheduled in-person and virtual appointments as well as drop-in appointments where you can come at your convenience.

If you would like to make an appointment for in-person or virtual counseling for yourself or your child, please send an email with your preferred day and time to counselor@crownpointeacademy.org.

Drop-in appointments are being held Tuesday – Friday from 10:00 – 2:00 in room 112 at the school.

If you would like to access services in the community, Colorado Crisis Services offers 24-hour services, walk-in clinics, a hotline, and a text line.

To your well-being!
